Hip-Hop Establishes Its Place in Higher Education

Hip-hop has held a place on many college students' mp3 players for years. However, this music genre has also become part of academia, influencing the way degree seekers learn as well as how professors teach.

During the fall 2011 semester, hip-hop made higher education news when Michael Eric Dyson, a professor at Georgetown University, offered students a class on Jay-Zand his career, Fox News reports. The course, which was titled Sociology of Hip-Hop: Jay-Z, aimed to use the celebrity to teach students about topics such as gender identity, capitalism and economic inequality.

Calling Hip-hop continues to establish itself as an important part of higher education. Jay-Z "an icon of American excellence," Dyson told Fox that the hip-hop star is an example of business acumen, as he is a clothing entrepreneur as well as the owner of the NBA's New Jersey Nets. Additionally, he feels Jay-Z's lyrics offer students a unique look into contemporary African American culture.

Still, this is not Dyson's first time integrating hip-hop culture into his classes. The professor told Fox that when he worked at the University of Pennsylvania, he taught a class on deceased rapper Tupac Shakur. However, even this course was not a first for hip-hop in academia, as the University of California at Berkeley gave student instructor Arvand Elihu permission to teach a course on the controversial rapper in 1997, according to VH1.

While many classes focusing on hip-hop have sprung up over the years, some academic leaders feel that the genre's influence has an even wider hold on academia. Emery Petchauer, an assistant professor at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, explains this theory in his new book, Hip-Hop Culture in College Students' Lives, according toInside Higher Ed.

The book describes what Petchauer calls the "hip-hop collegian," or college students who express themselves through the genre and apply this worldview to their academic lives. Petchauer argues that the verbal, kinetic, technical and electronic skills students learn by writing and producing hip-hop can be very useful in the classroom. For example, degree seekers who emcee or rap can develop shorthand, memorization and persuasive speaking skills, which Petchauer said can "transfer over nicely to the classroom and actually support learning."

In this way, the assistant professor believes colleges should work to understand hip-hop culture. Doing so will ensure that schools are using the best techniques possible to engage students.

"Colleges that don’t understand their students don’t serve them well," Petchauer toldInside Higher Ed. "If hip-hop is the most important cultural phenomenon in the lifetime of current students, which it is, then no institution can reasonably think it understands its students if it hasn’t engaged with hip-hop in some way."

Apps To Come For Spotify

Spotify may announce tomorrow the addition of an open app platform to its popular music service.
The "app finder" may include the ability to read reviews of the music as they listen to songs, people "in the music business" tell the Wall Street Journal. One app will reportedly display lyrics to the songs playing, while another will list upcoming concerts of artists in a user's play list and link to ticket sales sites.

The apps are expected to be free and available to users of both the free and premium versions of the service, the Journal reported. Wired reported in October that the Stockholm-based service would unveil a commercial API (application programming interface) that would allow third-party developers to build apps on top of Spotify's song catalog.

The announcement could come tomorrow during a press conference that Daniel Ek, co-founder and CEO of Spotify, has called for 9 a.m. PT. Speculation has suggested Spotify would unveil an online-video service or a download music store in the United States.

Spotify, the largest paid music subscription service with 2.5 million paying customers worldwide, has been looking for ways to stave off free music streaming sites such as MOG and Rdio. The company recently announced it was partnering with Facebook to integrate their services in an effort to get users to listen to a wider selection of music.

Aaron Rodgers is reigning Super Bowl MVP and Champion. After tonights win Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers are sitting more than comfortable at 9-0 at week 10 of the 2011 NFL season. Tonights win was a no contest. 45-9 against the Minnesota Vikings and Rodgers finished with a QB rating of 140. Not unusual, Aaron Rodgers QB rating for the year is 125 and that is on pace to break Payton Manning's single season record rating of 121.

Aaron Rodgers already has broke Steve Young's record of games in a row with a rating over 110 after tonight holding 9. Rodgers is also on pace to break the single season record of total passing yards. After last week he's the first QB ever to reach 2,600 yards in the first 8 games.

His name has been out there lately with "the best in the game today" and "possibly best ever." Today (especially with Manning out) I'd say there's a pretty good argument for him. Ever? Let's see what happens come February.

Aaron Rodgers is not alone in the leadership role with the Packers either, they have Greg Jennings who's having his best season, Clay Mathews who last year put himself into the leagues elite linebacker group, and veteran future Hall of Fame cornerback Charles Woodson, who still ignites the D with explosive defensive plays.

The Oakland Raiders just won, baby.

A day after Owner Al Davis died, the Raiders pulled off a fake punt he would’ve loved and found a way to gut out a 25-20 victory over the Texans yesterday in Houston.

Michael Huff intercepted Matt Schaub’s pass in the end zone on the final play to secure the win. Coach Hue Jackson dropped to his knees on the sideline, covered his face with his hands and cried as his team celebrated the bittersweet victory.

Sebastian Janikowski kicked four field goals, three from at least 50 yards. He was one of those unorthodox moves Oakland was known for under Davis, becoming only the third kicker drafted in the first round when the Raiders took him in 2000.
“He was looking over us,” Janikowski said.

Stadiums around the league observed a moment of silence before the early games to honor Davis, who died Saturday at his Oakland home at age 82. The Raiders (3-2) wore black decals on the backs of their helmets with “AL” written in silver letters.

Schaub threw for 416 yards and two touchdowns but missed star receiver Andre Johnson, who sat out with a right hamstring injury. The Texans (3-2) still had a chance to win with less than a minute left, facing a third-and-23 from the Oakland 39.Schaub scrambled and found tight end Joel Dreessen open at the 5, and Schaub spiked the ball with seven seconds left. Instead of trying to run for the winning score, Schaub lobbed a pass to Jacoby Jones, and Huff stepped in to pick it off.

Frank Gore had back to back big games. Against the Bucc's he ran for 125 yards and 1 touchdown on 20 carries.

It was all smiles on Sunday at The Stick for SF 49ers offense. By far their best performance of the season. Not to mention another stellar performance from the 49er "D". I think the 3 points on the board explains that.

Outcome: 48-3 Men in gold on top. And yes the San Francisco 49ers are number 1 in the NFL West at the end of week 5.

Did you hear the people calling for the benching of Frank Gore yesterday, in much the same way that they have been since the season opener against the Seattle Seahawks? If you did, then you should check yourself into some sort of mental hospital, because you're hearing voices. Gore's game against the Philadelphia Eagles speaks a lot as to his ability and how much he has left in the tank.

Now, the Eagles have had a pretty awful rush defense this year, so it doesn't mean that Gore is suddenly 100% and in his prime - but he did show a lot of things that some folks were beginning to doubt. If you heard some of the 49ers fans leading up to this game, they were calling for Kendall Hunter and for Gore to be benched, saying the latter had no acceleration and no power left. One fan even remarked that Anthony Dixon likely has more power in his running at this stage than Gore does.

Yeah. About that ... Gore ran for 127 yards on 15 carries and had a touchdown. A touchdown that tied the game and set the 49ers up for the David Akers extra point to give them the lead they didn't relinquish. His first run of the game went for forty yards and he had a few other big runs along the game. Gore hit the hole well and showed burst like we expect of him. He was caught from behind, but that's indicative of a normal Gore - he's never had the top-end speed to beat every defensive back. The offensive line did block a little bit better, but for the most part, it was a healthy looking Gore fighting for every yard. At the end of the game, on a third-and-one, Gore fought hard with a second effort to get the first and seal the deal.

In short, don't freak out and assume a guy is done with only three games to go on. True, Gore didn't look himself through those three, but anointing Hunter the starter after them is not just irresponsible, it's idiotic. If Hunter plays that whole game, the 49ers probably do not win. It's just as simple as that.

Though it is worth noting that Hunter looked good. He didn't have a lot of rushing yards, but when he got the ball, he looked close to breaking away just about every time. The 49ers utilized him like a change-of-pace back and it worked, tossing the ball and having him bounce out to the outside. He had a key 12-yard run in the third quarter to set up a Vernon Davis touchdown, and generally looked good.

The Eagles did start to catch on though, and in the first half, it seemed like the 49ers were trying to force the ball to Hunter out of desperation. Philadelphia keyed in on it and started to stop him, and that reflects what I said last week - Hunter needs to remain a change-of-pace back, because he's so good at catching people off balance. He's also too raw to shoulder so much responsibility, the 49ers need to make sure they get him his touches, just probably not all on one drive.

At any rate, the 49ers have two healthy and capable running backs to work with.

SF 49ers Put Down Pussy Cats

-Wasn't real sexy but in San Francisco we'll take it any given Sunday.

-San Francisco 49ers beat the Cincinnati Bengals 13-8.

Another win in direct result of SF 49ers defense. While the 49ers were having some real struggles on offense the defense was able to keep the Bengals from scoring a touchdown. Giving the 49ers offense some time to pull their act together and score.

Only touchdown of the game came from rookie Kendall Hunter a 7 yard running play into the end zone late in the fourth. It capped off a 10 play 70 yard drive that included some dominance from Vernon Davis. Gore continued to struggle a bit having a dropped pass, a fumble, and averaging 2.5 yards per carry.

SF 49er defense picked him up though, grabbing a couple turnovers themselves including a circus interception catch from Reggie Smith during a drive in the final minutes that could have gave the Cats a tieing score.

There are some glimps of hope but some obvious work to improve on. Especially coming from the "O" Line. Several offensive false starts and continuing to give up many sacks won't give the 49ers a "W" too often.

For now the good guys have a record of 2-1. (Should be 3-0 but we won't talk about that.)

Ted Ginn Jr. Seals The Deal

Ted Ginn Jr. seals the deal with two run backs late in the fourth quarter. First a kick return to quiet the Seahawks momentum after scoring a touchdown and then the second less than a minute later off a punt return. Wouldn't give Ginn all the credit for the W but he definitely put the nail in the coffin, he took the 49ers from a 2 point lead to a 16 point lead with only a couple minutes left in the game. The 49ers "D" also had a big game, laying down 5 sacks and holding the birds to 17 points. Jim Harbaugh was called "cool and collective" in his first win as a NFL head coach and Alex Smith didn't do so bad either. Alex ran in the only TD for the 49ers in the first three quarters and he threw 15 for 20 with no interceptions. If the 49ers "D" and special teams keep this kind of aggression and the offense cleans up their red zone a little bit the San Francisco 49ers are looking good to take the NFC West.

GMusic or iTunes?

If you one of the lucky ones, you’ve been playing with Music Beta by Google. Launched four months ago, is clearly a direct competitor to the Apple iTunes. I have been playing with it for a while, and I have to say, it’s pretty darn good.

Needless to say, music made by Google is tied to your Gmail account. When I signed up, I was given an eclectic collection of musical choices. And when I say eclectic, the music genres were all over the board.

The browser-based web interface reminds me of Apple’s iTunes or Microsoft’s Windows media player. A small pane on the left reveals MY LIBRARY. Here I can pick new and recent, songs, artists, albums and genres. There’s also an android app, however I have not tested that yet.

When I select songs, the main panel offers name, play time, artist name, album along with the number of times I’ve played it. Finally there is a thumbs up thumbs down rating. If you have a lot of music, this feature does not seem particularly valuable because what is playing may not be visible in this panel.

Thankfully, at the bottom of your panel beyond audio controls and what is currently playing, the thumbs up or down button to be found there as well.

This is quite useful in weeding out music you’re not particularly fond of. It is very easy to create mixes.
So far I have only tested syncing my audio collection with Microsoft’s Windows Media Player. When I first set up music by Google I was asked how much bandwidth I want to use for uploads. I selected the slowest option I had, 128 kb a second.

I simply told Windows media player to rip the hard drive automatically when I put a CD in. As I’m typing this I am ripping some early symphonies from Mozart, while listening to a couple of tracks from Suicidal Tendencies ( which Google has classified as an alternative/indie genre ).

A few days ago I got a notification from Google that said they have launched a new blog site called magnifier. The game plan is to feature a artist or record in group Tim Quirk head of music programming for Google points out the artists being featured because someone on the team thinks they’re pretty great.

You can add any or all songs to your music beta library instantly and of course this is free.

Android Smartphone Will Revive Walkman Brand | What Do You Think?

Sony Ericsson plans to revive the Walkman brand with an Android-based smartphone called Live with Walkman. A Walkman button accesses a music player, and content can be shared on Facebook. An analyst said Sony Ericsson will need to deliver a better music experience to compete with Apple's iPhone even as iPod sales are dropping.

In a move to differentiate itself in the smartphone market with a familiar and once-beloved brand in portable music, Sony Ericsson is planning to push a new device carrying the Walkman name. The Live with Walkman is an Android smartphone that promises a unique social music experience.
But can it deliver against Apple's iPhone? Although no one has yet successfully competed with the iPhone in music thanks in large part to iTunes, Sony Ericsson will give it a try with its new smartphone.

"Consumers want smartphones to deliver a rich and social entertainment experience," said Nikolaus Scheurer, head of product marketing at Sony Ericsson. "Rather than a one-dimensional music experience, they want instant and seamless access to new content, combined with the ability to share and connect with their friends."

Lotus Stepping Their Game Up

The unveiling of concept car is a landmark occasion for an auto designer. Lotus design director Donato Coco punctuated this point when the British company introduced six new cars at the Paris Motor Show last fall, fresh from his design studio. In less than two years on the job, Coco’s bold and sweeping strokes have redefined the look of contemporary Lotus cars as a premium marque designed to tangle with the biggest luxury brands. The Esprit, Elan, Elite, Elise, Eterne and the Lotus City Car — the Ethos hatchback— are a glance at the ambitious plans Lotus CEO Danny Behar hopes to achieve in the next product cycle.

The Esprit, a voluptuous two-seater mid engine supercar, is the first of these concept cars that will come to market in 2013. “This will be the first car that is completely new and will represent what we’ve been doing here for the past year,” Coco says. The car will speed from 0 to 62 mph in 3.4 seconds to reach a top speed of 205 mph.

With new product in the pipeline, Lotus is eying Porsche customers as their target audience. Lotus is refreshing its image as a contender with a renewed commitment to motorsports. Lotus has returned to Formula 1 with Lotus Renault GP, endurance racing with GT2, GT4 and LMP2 and single-seater racing with GP2, GP3 and IndyCar. Coco’s brings his own passion for racing to emphasize this mindset. He races vintage Ducati motorcycles in Italy every year.

The design studio is based out Lotus headquarters in Hethel, a small village in Norfolk, England. Coco works with a team of 65 designers and clay modelers. “The great thing is that this brand has remained intact,” he says. “The profile of this brand commercially is discreet. Now it’s time to bring it back. It’s an incredible opportunity for expression.”

As a designer, Coco has the requisite experience. The Italian native was educated at the Royal College of Art in London. He headed design for Ferrari before joining Lotus. He also was a design leader at Citroen. “I come from an artistic background,” he says. “My eye is permanently looking for harmony around me.” He’s inspired by contemporary architecture of Jean Nouvel and Norman Foster. “I’m not a specialist in architecture, but I think we are doing the same job,” he says. “The car is the sum of the engine, the architecture of its own features and its tradition.”

His charge at Lotus is unique – turning a niche brand into a major player. “This is a very atypical job,” he says. The company grew out of Colin Chapman’s motorsports pursuits, who based the company on a World War II airfield, and began manufacturing production cars in the late ‘50s. The company has changed hands several times and is now owned by Proton, a Malaysian car manufacturer.

“Lotus history is just restarting really,” Coco says. “You watch too much what has been done before, and your own answer could be influenced too much by this information. I don’t believe in trends so much in automotive, especially for premium sports cars that are unique. I don’t believe that customers are looking for something trendy. They look for products that have originality.”

To achieve his considerable task, Coco must consider Lotus’s proven attributes – namely the lightweight physique of its products. “It’s like music with seven notes you can do an opera or symphony. It’s all how you associate things. We have to give Lotus real emotion and lightness.”

Just wanted to drop a quick note.

Everything is going really well with the site now that it has been up for a little over week. It might not be always noticeable but we're making updates daily it seems, never exactly how you want it, know what I mean? Traffic is climbing, music is being made, we staying busy, especially Beneficial. He is going to have his second son any day now! Life is good.

Ran across this 3D street art, this one in particular was created at Johnny Walker headquarters in Taipei. Thought it was pretty sick and wanted to share. The artists name is Edgar Mueller, after I found this one I checked out more of his work and come to find out he has done real creative work all across Europe, all of which I've seen with the 3 dimensional scenic theme. I'm a new fan. Also a side note I might have have some Johnny on the rocks later.
